Back to School Safety

All-Guard #backtoschoolBack-to-school is an exciting time for everyone – new books, new teachers, new clothes. It also provides a good opportunity to go over some basic safety procedures with your children to make their lives safer and to give you peace of mind.

To and From School

Whether your child walks or rides a bicycle, it is important that you teach your child to be alert and obey all traffic signs and signals. Teach him or her to take the most direct route with the least amount of street crossings, and – whenever possible – to only use crossings with crossing guards.

If your child takes the school bus, make sure that he or she waits for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching the street. Tell your child to stay seated on the bus while it’s in motion, and when exiting to use the handrails and not jump off the steps.

Remind your child on a regular basis NEVER to accept any rides from strangers, or anyone that makes your child feel uncomfortable, and that it’s OK to say no to an adult. Establish a “code word” and instruct your child to only go with people who know the code. The code word should be easy for the child to remember but not obvious for a stranger to guess, such as the name of the family pet.

Also instruct your child to shout out “STRANGER DANGER” if the child starts to feel uncomfortable when approached by a stranger.

If possible, arrange for your child to travel to and from school with a friend, classmate, or older sibling.

All-Connect from All-Guard lets you receive emails or text alerts every time your child leaves or arrives home. For added protection and peace of mind, All-Guard’s cameras also allow you to watch live streaming video of your child and pets while you’re away – all directly from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

On the Playground

Cut the drawstrings on your child’s hoods and sweatpants so they extend out no more than three inches to avoid them getting caught in any of the playground equipment.

Teach your child to stay away from moving swings, and to not stand up on the seat when it’s his or her turn.

The biggest threat to your child’s safety is falling off the equipment onto hard concrete. Make sure that the playground surface is cushioned so your child’s fall will be softened by mulch, sand, or grass.

At Home

If you child is comfortable spending time home alone until you get home from work, discuss and practice a safety plan that is easy to follow. Display important phone numbers and set rules for how and when to use the stove, microwave oven, computer, and TV.

All-Guard cameras make it easy for you to not only keep a watchful eye on your child after school but also give you peace of mind knowing that your babysitter properly supervises your child when you’re not at home.

Call All-Guard on 800.255.4273 and ask us how we can help you protect and monitor your children and pets when you’re not at home.
