California Fire and Safety by All-Guard

fireman_building-whCalifornia fire and safety has come to the forefront recently due to a spike in deadly residential fires and statistics that indicate a woeful lack of even basic protection, such as smoke alarms. Fire prevention and detection are serious concerns for homeowners in San Francisco and throughout California. Ideally, prevention and detection measures should be integrated into the monitored, whole-house system used to protect one’s family and investments from burglary and other common residential threats.

National Fire Protection Association

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has further emphasized the need for better California fire and safety in its most recent report on U.S. fire statistics. A highlight of the report was the statistic that seven people on average die in a house fire in the U.S. every day, and in more than 60 percent of those incidents, there is no smoke alarm or operational smoke alarm present. The report also indicated that smoking remains the leading cause of deadly home fires and cooking is the likeliest cause of house fires in general.

Smoke Alarms

The most important step you can take to protect you family and home is to install smoke alarms. Install a smoke alarm at least on each level of the home, including the attic and basement, and consider installing additional alarms in danger zones, such as the kitchen, bedroom area and attached garage. Become familiar with these devices, test them on a monthly basis and refresh the batteries on a yearly basis regardless of the actual battery level.

Monitored Smoke Alarms

Basic, standalone smoke alarms, such as those available at your local hardware store, are better than no fire protection at all. However, ideal fire alarms in San Francisco are integrated into the house’s security system and monitored by a central station around the clock. With standard smoke alarms, there is always the chance that you sleep through the alarm or can’t respond to it due to smoke inhalation. With monitored fire alarms in San Francisco, trained professionals respond to the alarm on your behalf.

Other Prevention and Detection Steps

Once you’ve installed fire alarms in your San Francisco home, the next step is to create an emergency exit plan. Then practice it and refine it each quarter. Perform a monthly fire inspection of the home. Start with the smoke alarms if necessary; the alarm company may handle it. Next, perform an interior review for fire hazards, such as frayed wires and darkened electrical sockets. Then perform a similar review outdoors. Pay particular attention to the roof and the three-foot area directly around the house.
