Easy-to-Keep New Year Resolutions

New Year resolutions are easy to make but difficult to keep and usually by mid-January, we have all ‘forgotten’ most of them. Safety resolutions can often mean the difference between life and death but luckily, these are easier to keep than you think.

HomeSafeHomeSmoke Detectors
Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home; at a minimum place one on each floor of the house, covering all sleeping areas.

Regardless of whether they’re battery-powered or hard-wired with a battery backup, replace your smoke detectors every 10 years and replace batteries at least once a year. For optimum protection, test your detectors monthly.

Fire Escape Plan
Create a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year. Your fire escape plan should have two exit routes and one window in each room should be easy to access so it can be used as a fire exit.

Also consider switching all your round door handles to lever door handles. If you have your hands full or if you are not psychically able to turn the knob, the lever handle is easy to open with your elbow.

At a minimum, keep one fire extinguisher in your kitchen and on in your garage and learn how to use them. Check the instructions for when they need replacing.

See our blog entry for more information of creating a fire escape plan.

Windows and Doors
Check all windows and doors for faulty or broken locks and hinges. Install a sturdy deadbolt lock on every door to the outside, including the door into the house from the garage. Lock all outside doors at all times, even your garage door. If you don’t have one already, consider installing a peephole in your front door.

For added protection, call All-Guard to install cameras that will let you view who’s at your front door – even when you’re not at home.

Trim shrubs and trees near windows and doors that provide hiding places for burglars, and prune limbs that can serve as ladders to upper windows.

Light Switches
Can you reach the light switch as soon as you enter your home? The ability to turn on the light as soon as you enter your home is an important safety feature, especially when it’s dark.

Make sure your stairs are well lit, and place light switches both at the top and bottom of the stairs.
Install night-lights for better visibility in the dark, and plug a rechargeable flashlight into a socket by your bed.

Test ground fault interrupter (GFI) outlets annually. GFIs must be installed whenever you have an electrical outlet near water such as in your kitchen and bathrooms.
