Summer Pet Safety

Summer means fun and sun – and spending more time outdoors with our furry friends. Cats and dogs don’t dissipate heat as well as we do but with a little help from their owners, they can enjoy the warmer weather while staying safe and cool.

  • If your dog is left outside, make sure he has access to shade and fresh water. Doghouses tend to trap heat so instead fill a children’s wading pool with water he can cool off in
  • The biggest threat to your dog’s health during the hot summer months is not having access to enough fresh water; bring a couple of bottles of water whenever you and your dog leave home
  • Although most dogs generally fare better in the water than we do, not all dogs are good swimmers so don’t leave him unsupervised near a pool
  • If you take him to the beach, rinse him off thoroughly afterwards as the salt water may irritate his skin and cause damage to his fur
  • Make sure that he doesn’t drink seawater; the high levels of salt can irritate the intestinal tract and/or make him sick
  • Sand and asphalt can get very hot during the day and burn his paws; when taking him for a walk, make sure he has access to grassy spots for cooling off
  • If your dog has short hair, white fur, or pink skin he might be prone to sunburns. Apply sunblock to his ears and nose; consult with your vet first about choosing the right type for your pet
  • Avoid taking him for runs and long walks on hot days, and limit outdoor activities to the early morning or late evening hours when the air is cooler

Although it is common knowledge – and sense – not to leave pets in a parked car even “for just a minute”, dozens of animals suffer and die each year from heat exposure. Even with a cracked window, the temperature can reach well over 100 degrees in just minutes.
